Finding cheap fuel, especially in Sydney, has become something of pot luck, but now Telstra is about to come to the pump party with something we think you’ll all be interested in.

They’ve launched My Fuel on Telstra's Next G(tm) and 3G mobile networks. An Australian first, My Fuel allows customers to use their mobile phones to find the nearest petrol station selling the cheapest fuel in a selected metropolitan area.

The My Fuel service is updated daily and reports on the price of petrol in suburbs in Sydney Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Telstra Consumer Marketing and Channels Executive Director Segment, Rosie Simpson, said My Fuel offers a convenient way to keep track of ever-changing petrol prices.

"Telstra's My Fuel service takes the guesswork out of buying petrol, and it's quick and easy to use," Ms Simpson said.

"My Fuel provides updated snapshots of the latest petrol prices, so customers can make informed decisions and pinpoint the best petrol value in their local area.

"Our customers are discovering new uses for their mobiles on a daily basis, and Telstra's My Fuel service is a great way for motorists to get the most out of their Telstra Next G(tm) or 3G network."

Data is provided by an independent organisation that reports prices for approximately 3500 service stations across Australia.

When customers use the My Fuel service, they can select a suburb or postcode and the type of fuel they are looking for. The search results provide fuel prices and the addresses of petrol stations in the requested area, which is particularly useful when travelling.

A further benefit is the My Fuel Favourites function, which gives regular price updates for selected petrol stations, allowing customers to monitor price movements on a daily basis. Telstra will also be looking to expand the service over time.

My Fuel is available exclusively on Telstra's 3G and Next G(tm) and is accessed through BigPond Mobile in the Info and Travel section. There are no extra fees to access the service, other than Telstra's standard 3G and Next G(tm) network data charges. Telstra offers a range of data packs for frequent users.

It’s all very exciting stuff, and so especially so where saving a buck or two is concerned.
